Background of the Study
Early written records, including manuscripts, religious texts, and colonial documents, provide a valuable window into historical language change. In Igbo, these documents offer insights into vocabulary, syntax, and orthographic conventions from pre-colonial and colonial periods (Okafor, 2023). Over time, Igbo has undergone significant changes influenced by language contact, educational reforms, and sociopolitical shifts (Chinwe, 2024). Early texts reveal a language rich in oral tradition, later shaped by external influences that led to standardized forms. These written records are crucial for reconstructing historical linguistic stages and understanding semantic, syntactic, and phonological evolution. Despite their importance, systematic analyses integrating early records with modern linguistic data remain scarce. This study evaluates historical language change in Igbo by comparing early written records with contemporary usage to trace continuity and transformation.
Statement of the Problem
Although early Igbo written records are rich sources for studying language change, they are underutilized in systematic analyses. Research often treats these records as isolated data points without integrating them into a diachronic framework, resulting in gaps in understanding how Igbo has evolved (Okafor, 2023). This limitation affects language preservation and educational planning (Chinwe, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it integrates historical written records with modern linguistic data to provide a comprehensive picture of Igbo language change. Its findings will aid language preservation, inform curriculum development, and enrich historical linguistics research.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on early written Igbo records and their comparison with modern usage; it does not extend to oral traditions or other linguistic aspects.
